Writer/Righter

Need a voice? I write very loud.

Though bios should be written in third-person, how could a writer allow someone else to write her bio? Plus, Dahlia is not a fan of referring to herself in third-person. So ...

After earning my BA [Hons] degree in theatre and political science, I thought I'd never have to write again ... until I returned to school for journalism.

A writer, an actor, a polyglot (A poly-what?), a journalist, a body image specialist, a certified personal trainer, a nutrition and wellness expert, a professional Ping-Pong player (yes, seriously) ... I've done all this while also keeping my unruly curly hair in check.

At 21, after quickly climbing the corporate ladder at Air Canada and securing a highly desirable job, I realized I was living the dream - someone else's dream. So I quit, left Montreal, and began the nightmare of returning to school. Back in Winnipeg for school, I decided to pitch the idea of "Danger Girl" to 99.9 BOB FM.

After a relentless pursuit, the station called me in. "Dahlia, do you have any big fears?"

Me: "I'm not afraid of anything."

Me in my head: "I'm afraid of  E V E R Y T H I N G." (Especially water.)

And so my first time broadcasting live on-air I was submerged in 38,000 litres of water - for 48 hours - to help raise money for the Children's Hospital Foundation of Manitoba. (It may have been 38,020 litres of water, after being in there for two days without washroom access.)

In my last year of journalism school I interned at CBC, hoping to be hired. But they told me they "never" hire interns. Then I broke a story about police brutality and CBC hired an intern.

Soon after, I found myself travelling the world for acting and TV hosting opportunities. As an actor, I felt the pressures of body image. Even when I dropped to 90 pounds I was still told to lose weight. What? Did they want me to remove a kidney? Once I returned to Canada, all that nonsense inspired me to create the country's first ever body image awareness program for girls: Bye-Bye, Barbie!.

Since I was a child, I've always written plays, stories, poetry, and plenty of gobbledygook too. Today, you can find my social media meets pop culture column (#eSaidSheSaid) syndicated in over 200 Sun Media papers across Canada.

Wow. A lifetime of writing. I think it's time to promote myself from writer to writest.

And for everything else you NEVER wanted to know about me check this out.
