Review: Should you use a satin pillowcase?

Picture
Every night, whether you go to sleep on your six-dollar pillowcase or your 600-count Egyptian cotton pillowcase, vital oils are sucked out of your hair while crease lines are embedded in your face.

One of my more popular articles published of late in the Toronto Sun, “Curl, interrupted” is a story on my hair.

Hey, poverty and starvation aren't the only problems facing the world. Frizz is an issue too. So, while researching the first-world problem, I made a discovery in the fight against frizz: satin pillowcases.

In fact, many websites are dedicated to the benefits of the silky pillow shell, as a way to maintain hair’s shape, shine, and vitality, and as a way to keep skin soft and free of morning-after fabric lines.

So, I wrote to Mary at atouchofsatin.com, and asked if I could try out one of her much blogged about satin pillowcases.

After a couple weeks of treacherous testing, which entailed going to sleep nightly on a white, mellifluous pillowcase here’s what I found:

Did the pillowcase keep my curls overnight? These pillowguards aren’t miracle workers. I still awoke with some smooshed tresses, nothing a little gentle scrunching couldn’t fix, but not a huge difference from the level of smoosh from regular cases.

What I did find however, was a definite increase in shine.

During the winter months, central heat draws so much moisture from my hair (and skin), something integral to a smooth curl, but since using Mary’s touch of satin, my locks indeed maintain their glossy looks. (How I wish I would have had the case prior to my photo shoot for "Curl, interrupted.")

And I no longer wake up to the horror of, “Is that a new wrinkle or sheet imprint on my face?”.  My skin is as smooth as a baby’s bottom swaddled in a satin diaper.

My favourite benefit of the pillowcase is how it feels: cool, sleek, and better (and better looking) than any fancy schmancy Egyptian cotton. (Though my head and my heart literally differ in preference, and I still prefer cotton bed sheets to satin ones.)

So, whether you have curly or straight hair, a satin pillowcase is a good investment – and even if your hair doesn’t thank you as much as you hope, your skin will. And even if he doesn't care about his skin or hair, your husband will want a satin pillowcase too.
